This paper explores the history of the tradition of decorative tattooing alongside the history of the practice of communal bathing. Both practices have had connections with religion as well as pleasure, and both have continued as significant elements of Japanese society through the 20th century to today. However, with decorative tattooing becoming a symbol of subversive culture, in particular the yakuza, and communal bathing an integral part of popular culture, prohibition of people with tattoos from entering communal baths became common in the post-World War II era and remains so today. And though tattooing has gained widespread popularity around the world in the first two decades of the 21st century, the stigma attached to the practice remains strong in Japan. But with the rapid increase in inbound tourism, operators of communal bathing facilities, as well as the Japanese visitors to them, will reluctantly need to adjust their attitudes along with their policies, in order to meet the needs of international tourists and the norms of the world beyond Japan.","subitem_description_type":"Abstract"}]},"item_10002_source_id_11":{"attribute_name":"書誌レコードID","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"AN10434445","subitem_source_identifier_type":"NCID"}]},"item_10002_source_id_9":{"attribute_name":"ISSN","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_source_identifier":"1346-6437","subitem_source_identifier_type":"ISSN"}]},"item_creator":{"attribute_name":"著者","attribute_type":"creator","attribute_value_mlt":[{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Nootbaar, Julie Joy"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"3568","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]},{"creatorNames":[{"creatorName":"Nootbaar, Julie Joy","creatorNameLang":"en"}],"nameIdentifiers":[{"nameIdentifier":"3569","nameIdentifierScheme":"WEKO"}]}]},"item_files":{"attribute_name":"ファイル情報","attribute_type":"file","attribute_value_mlt":[{"accessrole":"open_date","date":[{"dateType":"Available","dateValue":"2023-03-27"}],"displaytype":"detail","filename":"60(47-56).pdf","filesize":[{"value":"590.4 kB"}],"format":"application/pdf","licensetype":"license_note","mimetype":"application/pdf","url":{"label":"60(47-56)","url":"https://geitan.repo.nii.ac.jp/record/1722/files/60(47-56).pdf"},"version_id":"9144f3c1-a87c-4baf-ab8b-e1fd4a8e8ab4"}]},"item_language":{"attribute_name":"言語","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_language":"eng"}]},"item_resource_type":{"attribute_name":"資源タイプ","attribute_value_mlt":[{"resourcetype":"departmental bulletin paper","resourceuri":"http://purl.org/coar/resource_type/c_6501"}]},"item_title":"No Tattoos in the Bath:An exploration into the histories of tattooing and bathing in Japanese culture and why the two don’t mix in contemporary Japan","item_titles":{"attribute_name":"タイトル","attribute_value_mlt":[{"subitem_title":"No Tattoos in the Bath:An exploration into the histories of tattooing and bathing in Japanese culture and why the two don’t mix in contemporary Japan"}]},"item_type_id":"10002","owner":"12","path":["131"],"pubdate":{"attribute_name":"公開日","attribute_value":"2023-03-27"},"publish_date":"2023-03-27","publish_status":"0","recid":"1722","relation_version_is_last":true,"title":["No Tattoos in the Bath:An exploration into the histories of tattooing and bathing in Japanese culture and why the two don’t mix in contemporary Japan"],"weko_creator_id":"12","weko_shared_id":-1},"updated":"2023-06-19T07:40:50.391063+00:00"}
