| 内容記述 | In FY2024, the number of inbound tourists to Japan exceeded a record-breaking 36 million, prompting Japanese businesses to confront "internal internationalization"—the need to accommodate an increasingly multinational customer base within the domestic market (Japan National Tourism Organization, 2025). However, existing research on internationalization has relied on organizational learning models based on the assumption of overseas expansion and has not sufficiently explained how changes in customer composition within the domestic market affect the tactical level of small and medium-sized service businesses. This study focuses on small service-sector businesses that have direct customer contact with inbound tourists, aiming to identify factors that influence internal internationalization. The findings suggest that, prior to recognizing the need for tactical level changes associated with internal internationalization, business owners must reach a certain threshold of contact with inbound customers. Furthermore, when the opportunities for interaction with inbound tourists are limited, only superficial multilingual responses—such as basic signage—are observed. Such limited responses may, in turn, reduce opportunities for customer contact, leading to a loss of experiential learning related to internationalization and potentially delaying the internal internationalization process. |
