This study analyzes the attacking time and number of passes of the top-10 men’s water polo teams at the 2025 World Aquatics Championships and identifies the characteristic features of each team. The study’s video-based analysis has yielded the following findings.
In primary attacks, the mean attacking time was 18.4 ± 6.29 seconds, and the mean number of passes was 3.7 ± 2.10. Both variables differed significantly by team, with Greece exhibiting the longest attacking time and the highest number of passes. Regarding total shots and action shots, Greece tended to have longer attacking times and more passes, whereas Japan and Romania tended to have shorter attacking times and fewer passes.
In exclusion-inducing situations, neither attacking time nor number of passes differed significantly by team; however, when exclusion was induced at the center position, Hungary, Croatia, Greece, and Spain had longer attacking times and a greater number of passes. For extra-man shots, no significant differences were found among teams for either variable, but Greece and Italy tended toward longer offensive durations and a higher number of passes. |
